Moo Hong (หมูฮ้อง)
Moo Hong (หมูฮ้อง) is a classic Thai dish featuring tender braised pork in a flavorful sauce. It is a comforting and savory dish that is often served with steamed rice. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to cook Moo Hong:
Ingredients:
500 grams pork belly or pork shoulder, cut into bite-sized pieces
4-5 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 tablespoons palm sugar or brown sugar
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
1 tablespoon fish sauce
1 teaspoon ground white pepper
2 cups water or pork broth
5-6 hard-boiled eggs (optional)
Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
Instructions:
Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
Add the minced garlic to the hot oil and stir-fry for a minute until fragrant.
Add the pork pieces to the pot and cook until they are lightly browned on all sides.
In a small bowl, mix together the palm sugar, soy sauce, oyster sauce, dark soy sauce, fish sauce, and ground white pepper. Stir until the sugar is dissolved and the ingredients are well combined.
Pour the sauce mixture over the pork in the pot. Stir well to coat the pork evenly.
Add the water or pork broth to the pot, ensuring that the liquid covers the pork pieces.
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the pork is tender and the flavors have melded together. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
If using hard-boiled eggs, add them to the pot during the last 30 minutes of cooking, allowing them to absorb the flavors.
Once the pork is tender, taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if needed by adding more soy sauce, oyster sauce, or sugar.
Remove the pot from heat and transfer the Moo Hong to a serving dish.
Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves for added freshness and aroma.
Serve Moo Hong hot with steamed rice and enjoy the rich and savory flavors.
Note: The longer you simmer the pork, the more tender it will become. Adjust the cooking time based on your preference for the pork's tenderness.
Enjoy the comforting and flavorful Moo Hong!
